Phila. TV Weatherman Calls it Quits After 56 Years

by KYW's Pat Loeb

A Philadelphia television weatherman has decided that 56 years in broadcasting is enough.

"It is with some very mixed emotions that I tell you tonight that Dave Roberts has decided it is time to retire."

That's WPVI anchorman Jim Gardner announcing Roberts' retirement on the 11 o'clock newscast. Gardner said in an interview he's happy for Roberts but will miss their unique relationship:

"There is such an unstated, underlying trust that we will try to make each other look as good as we can. You know there's a real safety net there when Dave and I are talking to each other on the air."

Gardner says the station has a deep bench of talent to follow in Roberts' footsteps, including 11 o'clock weather reporter, Cecily Tynan:

"I'll really miss him. I think we all will miss him terribly."

Roberts told Gardner, it would be mutual.
