The Philadelphia School District is getting ready to launch a campaign against truancy, designed by students themselves.
The school district is providing $50,000 for the "Tackle Truancy" ad campaign, but members of the Citywide Student Government are developing it. Tyrone Gary, a junior at the Franklin Learning Center, told the School Reform Commission that the campaign will include a web site, and SEPTA ads:
"We also would like to place the messages inside of the schools. As well as in highly truant areas such as shopping malls, the Gallery, Broad and Olney. Mr. Chairman, we will place a sign on the corner of your block, if that's where students gather!"
Students say they have commitments from Donovan McNabb, Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins to record "Tackle Truancy" public service announcements. The campaign is expected to kick-off in January and run through June.
