Weekend Warriors Beware

by KYW's medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough

It is great to workout.  There can’t be anything wrong with getting exercise. Right?? Well, not exactly.

One of the major dangers with exercise is when we do too much too fast. A perfect example is the so called weekend warrior. This is the person who hits the treadmill for twenty minutes or more of repetitive exercise. Taken at the proper pace this is fine, but not if the person is pushing the limits.

The problems are numerous for the person who tries to get the entire month’s exercise in one day. The worst case scenario is an issue with the heart, put under maximal stress without preparation. But there are other issues as well. These are more common problems but frustrating ones, things like pulled muscles and severe strains.

The best way to exercise is to build slowly overtime and be consistent.
