Charges Filed Against Woman in Upper Darby Car Crash

by KYW's Michelle Durham and Ian Bush

Three Upper Darby boys are hospitalized with serious injuries after they were hit by a car on their way home from school on Tuesday afternoon.

The driver, Dawn Snell, 42, was charged with aggravated assault and several other offenses.

Upper Darby Police superintendent Michael Chitwood says the boys -- two 12-year-olds and a 13-year-old -- were standing by the curb, waiting to cross at the intersection of Copely and Marshall Roads:

"They were not doing anything illegal with respect to crossing the road, and apparently this woman was driving at a high rate of speed.  Speed is going to cause an accident -- three young men were violently struck by a speeding automobile, and that's a tragic, tragic occurrence."

Authorities say Snell, of Lansdowne, Pa., was in a rush -- speeding to get her child to the train station in time:

"The careless operation of the vehicle led her to go into the westbound lanes, where she struck the three young men. After she struck them, she kept on going, and hit another vehicle, which she drove into a parked vehicle on Marshall Road, and then the vehicle came to a stop."

He says Snell's windshield was smashed by the force of impact with the boys, who were walking home from school.

She's being held on a million dollars bail for a preliminary hearing next week.
