Local Expert Speculates on Lou Dobbs' Next Steps

by KYW’s David Madden

There’s been a lot of speculation lately about what’s next for former CNN commentator Lou Dobbs and much of it has centered on his potential political aspirations maybe in New Jersey or perhaps nationally.

Dobbs (photo) has a radio show, a farm in North Jersey, $8 million severance check from CNN and, apparently, a lot of people willing to make suggestions about his future. Ruth Mandel is director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University and she’s amused by all the talk:

“There doesn’t seem to be an election that takes place and then a breather. Nowadays as soon as an election is over, people are talking about some other election.”

In Dobbs’s case, it may be a run for the White House. A spokesman for the commentator tells the New York Times there may need to be an intermediate step along the way, maybe the US Senate. And Bob Menendez’s seat is up in 2012.

Should Dobbs do that, he could take the tough, independent route or maybe seek the GOP nomination although he’d have a lot of political fence mending to do.
