Phila. Broadcast Pioneer Al Alberts Dies at Age 87

by KYW’s John McDevitt

A Philadelphia broadcasting pioneer and music industry legend died on Friday. Al Alberts passed away at his home in Arcadia, Florida. He was 87.

"And now here is the host of the showcase and the star of our show -- Al Alberts.”

Al Alberts was founder of the four aces and hosted the Al Alberts Showcase -- a musical variety show featuring area children.  It aired on WPVI for 32 years until the early 90s. Steve Sacks was a member of the technical staff for the show. He says Alberts was a true professional:

"The show, which we would video tape normally on a Thursday night, things would go wrong (like) a tape machine would stop or somebody forgot to hit a button and go through a number and find out. He was always patient and if anything, would laugh about it. He was a very nice wonderful man."

And who can forget his song, On the Way to Cape May.

Al Alberts had been hospitalized in recent months and his son says he apparently died of complications from kidney failure.
