Bill Campbell



Bill Campbell, known to all Philadelphia sports fans as “The Dean,” brings nearly seven decades of experience and insight to his sports commentaries on KYW Newsradio 1060. 

Campbell began his broadcasting career while still in high school in 1940 as a radio announcer in Atlantic City, NJ.  The following year he moved to Lancaster, Pa. to handle general announcing duties and cover minor league baseball.  After serving his country, he moved to Philadelphia and in 1946 was named sports director for WCAU Radio and later WCAU-TV, where he produced and broadcast daily sports programs.

His basketball broadcasting career includes work for the Philadelphia Warriors and the 76ers, during which he called Wilt Chamberlain’s famous 100-point game in Hershey, Pa. 

In 1972 Campbell was named director of broadcasting for the Sixers –- a post he held until 1981.  He also broadcast ‘Big Five’ college basketball in Philadelphia for many years. 

From 1952 to 1966 Campbell was a play-by-play broadcaster for the Philadelphia Eagles, and in 1962 he became the play-by-play broadcaster for the Philadelphia Phillies, a position he held until 1971. 

Bill has been named Broadcaster of the Year by the National Sports Broadcasters Association and received the Philadelphia Sportswriters Award for outstanding service in 1989. 

In 2005, Campbell received the coveted Curt Gowdy broadcaster award at a Basketball Hall of Fame ceremony in Springfield, Mass.

He is also a member of the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Sports Halls of Fame.

In 2008, Bill was named "Person Of The Year" by the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia.
