A new way to tour Philadelphia’s historic district -- on a seven-person ‘superbike’ -- appeared this week. But if city officials have their way, it may not be around for very long.
Alfred Krawitz, who owns the "Superduck" vehicles, started offering a new way for tourists to get around. He calls it the Superbike:
“It’s a bicycle that holds seven passengers. One person drives it. It has a hydraulic braking system. It has a Porsche front end.”
City officials question the safety of the Superbike, but their hands may be tied because it isn’t covered under state motor vehicle or city codes.
Krawitz says it’s just a big bike, and he went ahead and starting selling rides.
Officials say Krawitz at the very least needs a vending license to do that, and Councilman Frank DiCicco, whose district includes the historic area, agrees:
“If he’s doing it without licensing, the vehicles should be confiscated.”
Meanwhile, the National Park Service has suspended Krawitz’s Superducks for seven days for aggressive solicitation.
