As Powerball players queue up for a shot at another big jackpot in Wednesday’s drawing, the Pennsylvania Lottery has announced record sales for the fiscal year that just ended.
State revenue department spokeswoman Stephanie Weyant says Pennsylvania Lottery sales hit $3.07 billion in 2005-06, a 16 percent year-to-year increase:
“The sales for the fiscal year that just ended beat out the previous year by $425 million. That’s the highest single-year dollar increase in the lottery’s 34-year history.”
Weyant says some of the increased revenue will be used to help pay for the recently-approved immediate expansion of the property tax and rent rebate program for seniors.
She says the Pennsylvania Lottery has reversed a long decline in the number of retailers. The popularity of Powerball doesn’t hurt, either. The jackpot is growing again.
Wednesday’s drawing has an annuity value of $178 million or a lump sum cash value of $81 million.
