Local Researcher Makes Advances in the Field of DNA

by KYW’s John Ostapkovich

A Jefferson Medical College researcher is sharing a patent for a new, speedier way to do basic DNA analysis.

Cop shows from CSI on, make DNA analysis look quick. Turn in the sample, break for commercial and, voila, the genome gnome has results. But assistant professor of surgery Jonathan Brody says it took too long so he and a former colleague decided to take a new look at the electrified buffer solution used to separate DNA:

"We were able to develop a better solution than what's been used for over 30 years now by researchers in all walks of science."

It's better because it's faster. Brody's test timeframe, old and new:

"I think a realistic thing. If you say two hours, you could say 15 minutes."

And Brody's hope is that adoption of this new method will speed research, and cures.
