A closing ceremony was scheduled for Tuesday morning at 10am at the site of the "President's House" archaeological site on Independence Mall (see previous story), as dirt is poured back over the remains to temporarily preserve them.
Those working on the President's House site want observers to understand why dirt is being poured back onto the site: to preserve it for the winter from the elements while a study team figures out how to incorporate it into the permanent President's House monument.
Attorney Michael Coard is a founding member of ATAC (Avenging the Ancestors Coalition) and a member of the project oversight committee:
"Throughout American history, the truth is rarely discussed in connection with slavery. And when folks tend to find the truth, other folks tend to cover it up. This might to look to folks like another example of covering it up. But it's the exact opposite: we're covering it up in order to preserve it, we're preserving it to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about slavery in America."
