Ed Fischer

Ed Fischer is a news editor for KYW Newsradio and the webmaster for the station's web site, KYW1060.com.  He has worked as a journalist, as a financial manager, and as an information systems manager during his 35-plus years in the broadcasting industry.
 
Ed grew up in Philadelphia listening to WFIL, WIBG, and KYW Newsradio.  His introduction to broadcasting was via a high school internship that had him volunteering at public radio station WHYY-FM (then called WUHY-FM, and located at the time at 46th and Market Streets).  He learned the fundamentals of radio production and editing there, which led to additional work conducting interviews and editing tape in the news department of WIBG.

In college, Ed served as news director of Carnegie-Mellon University's student-run radio station while simultaneously volunteering at Pittsburgh's public radio station, WQED-FM, and getting his BA degree in American history.

After a stint as news director at a station in the Poconos and another as press secretary for a well-known Pennsylvania politician during the mid-'70s, Ed went to work for CBS Radio.  He worked two years at WCAU Radio in Philadelphia during its all-news period, then was transferred to WCBS Radio in New York City.

Ed wrote, edited, and produced news at WCBS for two more years, then came back to Philadelphia to attend the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

MBA degree in hand, Ed was rehired by CBS as a financial manager in New York City. 

Three years later, he was lured away by Tribune Broadcasting Company to serve as financial manager for Independent Network News, a syndicated daily news program  carried each night on more than 110 television stations around the country.

While at Tribune, Ed also served as manager of information systems for its east coast television and radio stations.  He co-chaired a broadcasters' committee that eventually succeeded in bringing television cameras and microphones into courtrooms in New York State.

In 1995, Ed was recruited by Post-Newsweek Stations in Hartford, Connecticut to serve as director of information systems for its six television stations.  He was also a member of the board of Hartford Public Access Television.

Four years later, Ed was delighted to have the opportunity to return to his home town to serve his high school alma mater -- Friends Select School, at 17th and The Parkway -- for a year and a half as its alumni director. 

Now, Ed is back in the broadcasting business, making use of both his journalism and his information systems backgrounds at KYW Newsradio. 

Ed and his wife Dawn live in a loft in Old City, just a few blocks from the station.  Ed is an instrument-rated private pilot and an avid sailor.
