Philadelphia has another prestigious lead-in event to the 2008 Olympic Games; it will host the team trials for table-tennis.
The play will be fast and furious, when elite table tennis athletes from across the country compete in January, on the Drexel campus, for the privilege of representing the US at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
The chairman of the Philadelphia Olympic committee, Joe Torsella says it's a fascinating and fast-growing sport:
"We are beginning to succeed in adding to all the great sports traditions we have with additional Olympic and international sports events."
Philadelphia previously landed the US Olympic team's gymnastics trials set for June of next year. Torsella says Philadelphia is one of only two US cities -- the other is Las Vegas -- to host two Olympic trials:
"Each event is a building block for the future. You begin to build a relationship with people, athletes, organizers and the sport as a whole.”
He says they're helping to position Philadelphia as a truly international sports city.
