The district attorney of Montgomery County, Pa. -- a Republican -- has mailed a letter to the White House asking President Bush to consider firing US attorney general Alberto Gonzales, saying his ongoing presence in that job is making it more difficult both for local law enforcement and for local GOP candidates.
Montco DA Bruce Castor (in file photo above) says he mailed the letter on Tuesday because he is getting the impression from residents in Montgomery County that confidence in the attorney general has been lost:
"Well, I'm seeing it on the level as a prosecutor, but I'm also seeing it on the level as a candidate for election this fall. The Republican brand is taking a torpedo here. It's one thing that he's the attorney general of the United States; another thing is that he is the Republican attorney general of the United States, and it makes it all look bad who are running for office as well."
Castor -- running for Montgomery County commissioner -- says he doesn't expect a reply but hopes that at some point it will reach the president's ear so that he'll know that whatever decision is made will have a greater reach than just inside the beltway in Washington.
