Trans Fat Ban in Phila. Starts This Weekend
|
by KYW's Mike Dunn
Philadelphia is about to go trans fat free, at least mostly.
The ban on trans fats, signed into law last spring, takes effect Saturday, though bakeries get a year's grace period.
The city Health Department has been sending out notices to eateries in town that the trans fat ban, passed by Council and signed by the Mayor, takes effect September 1st.
Izzat Melhem is assistant Health Commissioner.
"It shouldn't be a difficult change. There are a number of products out on the market that have been developed, that can be used as substitutes that do not contain artificial trans fats."
Melhem says this will be enforced during regular restaurant inspections, when owners will have to show the labels of the fats they're using.
Bakeries get a break; they have until September 2008 to switch over.
One city councilmember, Joan Krajewski, says bakeries should be exempted, and she plans to reopen that debate with hearings this fall.
