On Sunday, New Jersey’s seven percent sales tax is being extended to items that were previously exempt, including country club memberships and health club dues.
As part of the budget compromise reached back in July between the governor and legislature, the sales tax was raised a penny on July 15th while extending the sales tax was postponed until October 1st.
Treasury Department spokesman Tom Vincz says some membership fees and dues are now subject to the sales tax:
“Golf clubs and health clubs as a general umbrella would cover the category of services and gyms that are subject to the sales tax on the membership fees.”
The sales tax is also being extended to licensed digital property such as downloads and software. Included in the tax are music, cell phone ringtones, movies, and books.
