Philadelphia’s ban on smoking is barely a week old, but this coming week could bring some serious alterations to it, courtesy City Council.
City Council could vote as early as this Thursday on a bill that tweaks the smoking ban in some pretty significant ways, including boosting the number of taverns that could apply for a permanent waiver.
Mayor Street is on board:
“I will make phone calls and I will urge Councilmembers to support the bill.”
The chief sponsor, Councilman Frank DiCicco, won’t call the revisions up for a vote unless he can nail down a 9th Yes vote. Street isn’t surprised it has come to this:
“From the very beginning, everyone knew that this bill would be the product of a compromise. And that those people who are for a ban would reach for those people who have reservations about a ban.”
The changes would also push back the start date until January 8th of next year, meaning if this passes the ban would be lifted for a couple of months.
